Hasthasekam is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy that involves the continuous pouring of warm medicated oil (Taila) or herbal decoctions (Kashaya) over the hands (Hasta – हाथ), followed by gentle massage and fomentation. This therapy is particularly beneficial for pain, stiffness, numbness, and weakness in the hands and wrists, making it ideal for conditions such as arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and post-fracture rehabilitation.
The patient is seated comfortably with their hands resting on a support. A gentle oil massage (Abhyangam) is performed on the palms, wrists, and forearms using Maha Narayana Taila or Dhanwantharam Taila. Warm herbal decoction or oil is prepared and brought to a suitable temperature (around 38–40°C).
The medicated oil or herbal decoction is continuously poured over both hands from a height of 4–6 inches using a Dhara Patra (metal vessel with a spout). The pouring is done in a rhythmic manner for 20–30 minutes, ensuring even distribution over the palms, wrists, and fingers. The therapist gently massages the hands while pouring the oil to enhance absorption and circulation. This process may be repeated for 7–14 days, depending on the condition.
The excess oil is wiped off with a soft cloth and the hands are cleansed with warm herbal decoction. A mild herbal steam therapy (Nadi Swedana) is applied to relax the muscles. The patient is advised to keep the hands warm and avoid exposure to cold water. Light hand exercises or Hasta Mudras may be recommended to improve flexibility.
Hasthasekam is a unique Ayurvedic therapy that focuses on healing and rejuvenating the hands. It is especially beneficial for individuals suffering from joint pain, nerve disorders, weakness, or occupational hand strain. By combining the therapeutic effects of medicated oils, herbal decoctions, and massage, this therapy helps restore strength, flexibility, and overall hand function.
