Kashaya Dhara Therapy

Njavarakizhi Therapy

Kashaya Dhara is an Ayurvedic therapy in which medicated herbal decoctions (Kashaya) are poured over the body in a rhythmic manner to cleanse, detoxify, and rejuvenate the system. It is highly effective in reducing inflammation, alleviating pain, and balancing aggravated Doshas, especially Pitta and Kapha.

The term Kashaya Dhara is derived from:
Kashaya (कषाय) – Herbal decoction
Dhara (धारा) – Continuous stream or pouring

This therapy is particularly useful in skin diseases, inflammatory conditions, rheumatism, obesity, and Pitta-related imbalances. It provides deep detoxification while improving circulation and nourishing the tissues.

Procedure

  • Purva Karma (Pre-Treatment Preparation)

The patient is advised to take a light diet (Lagu Ahara) and warm herbal drinks before the therapy to prepare the body. The patient is made to lie on the therapy table (Droni), either in supine or prone position, depending on the affected area. A gentle Abhyangam (oil massage) is performed using medicated oils like Dhanwantharam Taila or Pinda Taila to open up the pores and relax the muscles. The herbal decoction is prepared fresh, ensuring the correct combination of herbs based on the individual's Dosha condition.

  • Pradhana Karma (Main Procedure)

The lukewarm herbal decoction is poured continuously over the body in a rhythmic manner from a Dhara vessel. The decoction is poured in circular and linear motions, ensuring even distribution and maximum absorption. The process continues for 30–45 minutes, maintaining a consistent temperature between 38–42°C. Special attention is given to affected areas like joints, spine, and abdomen, depending on the condition. The therapy is usually performed for 7–14 days, depending on the severity of the disorder.

  • Paschat Karma (Post-Treatment Care)

The body is wiped clean with a warm towel, and the patient is advised to rest for 30–45 minutes. Light herbal steam therapy (Nadi Sweda) may be given to enhance the detoxification process. The patient is advised to avoid cold exposure, heavy meals, and physical exertion for a few hours. A light, warm, and easily digestible diet (Pathya Ahara) is recommended.
